Hi I have looked up Jackman in the Dorchester directory for 1890. (I know it's a little early in date but it's the only resource I could find online!) I think the street directory has gotten the street name slightly wrong. (it wouldn't be the first time!). It states 'Arthur David Jackman, outfitter, clothier, hatter, & boot and shoe warehouse, 28 High EAST Street'. I think that should say High WEST Street. (as the door number is the same as it is today too - i.e 28)
Link to the directory: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/pageviewer.asp?fn=0000a125.tif&dn=BCL15009Atif&zoom=s
Thanks a lot Carrie for your research. That sounds very much like an error by the typographer indeed. After creating pages and pages of directory, putting "east" for "west" or the opposite is an easy mistake to make.
