Shaktiman Cement, Sankhu, Nepal

Indian cement manufacturer Shaktiman Ltd was founded in 1991 in Delhi. The company's logo makes full use of the name: indeed, Shaktimaan in India refers to someone, usually not from this world, with extraordinary powers ("शक्ति / shakti" means "power"). In other words, some kind of Superman.

Was this really a library that lended books, videos and/or music CDs or simply a shop selling these products? The name has faded a bit but looks as if it could be "Bajra."

TCL The Creative Life (1), Sankhu, Nepal

Founded in 1981, cheap cassette manufacturer TTK was forced to change its name to TCL in 1985 after it was sued by TDK. Since then this Chinese company based in Huizhou in the province of Guangdong has become one of the largest manufacturers of TV sets in the world and has expanded into other electronic products.
This is just the first of several TCL painted signs found in the small town of Sankhu.

Coca-Cola, Sankhu, Nepal

Sankhu is a small Newari town in the western part of the Kathmandu valley, on one of the old trade routes to Tibet. The main reason for coming here is the Bajra Yogini Temple, a couple of kilometres further on the flanks of a moutain. While crossing the town, several painted signs can be seen, beginning with this Coca-Cola one near the bus station.

Whitney Bungalows, Ubud, Indonesia

I didn't go and check how the view from the Whitney Bungalows was but quite a few of the hotels I stayed at in Bali had the most spectacular views over rice terraces, volcanoes, and lakes.

Ikt Soki, Ubud, Indonesia

I Ketut Soki is a famous Balinese painter (his website is here) and was one of the founders in the 1960s of the Young Artists movement. So this potentially ambiguous painted sign does not indicate he paints young fellow artists but that, as a painter, he belongs to that Young Artists movement.

Hand Batik Painting, Ubud, Indonesia

I didn't take a photo of all the painted signs I saw in Bali but this one caught my eye thanks to the Buddhist monk represented on it. After De'Goes Salon, this is another business whose owner goes by the name of Ketut (see yesterday's post for more info about this name).

De' Goes Salon, Ubud, Indonesia

Painted Sign for De' Goes Salon or Beauty Parlour in the hamlet of Singakerta, near Ubud, owned by Jero Ketut Sukreni. "Jero" indicates the person (usually a woman) changed caste, usually by marrying someone from a higher caste. As for "Ketut", it reveals this person was the fourth child of the family. According to traditional beliefs, Balinese families should only have three children, whose names reflect their position as the oldest one, the middle one and the last one. Should a fourth child be born, s/he is considered as a "bonus" child and named "Ketut", meaning "Little banana" or "Outer edge of a banana bunch." And if a couple has more than four, the name cycle starts again.

Two businesses selling medicines and other health products, the Hasanuddin Pharmacy and the Sumber Waras Drugstore, stand side by side in this street of Singaraja, Bali. The design of these signs clearly shows they were painted by the same person. The colours of the first one are slightly less vibrant though.

Telkomsel Kartu As, Singaraja, Indonesia

For this week's series of painted signs, we're heading to Indonesia, and more precisely to the island of Bali.

Its prpmoters claim Kartu As is not only the cheapest ("Paling murah") but also the best for Bali ("Paling Bali")

Kirloskar and Yeti Paints, Kathmandu

Here are two roller shutters with colourful painted signs for completely different brands. Kirloskar is an Indian conglomerate whose origins go back to 1888. It specialises, amongst other things, in electrical equipment. Meanwhile, as the name suggests, Yeti Paints is a Nepalese paint manufacturer.

The Yeti Paints example shows that signs painted on roller shutters are not necessarily connected to the activity carried out in the premises. Indeed, this is a small restaurant specialising, amongst other dishes, in momo (Tibetan-style dumplings, one of the country's most popular foods).

Pashupati Paints, Kathmandu

Established in 1984, Pashupati Paints is now one of Nepal's leading brands of paint. Its advertisements can be seen everywhere across the country. The name was probably chosen for its good omen and because Nepalese people were already very familiar with it: indeed Pashupati is one of the multiple names of the great God Shiva and the temple of Pashupatinath, just to the east of Kathmandu city centre, is one of the country's most sacred sites.
