Whitney Bungalows, Ubud, Indonesia

I didn't go and check how the view from the Whitney Bungalows was but quite a few of the hotels I stayed at in Bali had the most spectacular views over rice terraces, volcanoes, and lakes.

Ikt Soki, Ubud, Indonesia

I Ketut Soki is a famous Balinese painter (his website is here) and was one of the founders in the 1960s of the Young Artists movement. So this potentially ambiguous painted sign does not indicate he paints young fellow artists but that, as a painter, he belongs to that Young Artists movement.

Hand Batik Painting, Ubud, Indonesia

I didn't take a photo of all the painted signs I saw in Bali but this one caught my eye thanks to the Buddhist monk represented on it. After De'Goes Salon, this is another business whose owner goes by the name of Ketut (see yesterday's post for more info about this name).

De' Goes Salon, Ubud, Indonesia

Painted Sign for De' Goes Salon or Beauty Parlour in the hamlet of Singakerta, near Ubud, owned by Jero Ketut Sukreni. "Jero" indicates the person (usually a woman) changed caste, usually by marrying someone from a higher caste. As for "Ketut", it reveals this person was the fourth child of the family. According to traditional beliefs, Balinese families should only have three children, whose names reflect their position as the oldest one, the middle one and the last one. Should a fourth child be born, s/he is considered as a "bonus" child and named "Ketut", meaning "Little banana" or "Outer edge of a banana bunch." And if a couple has more than four, the name cycle starts again.

Pharmacy and Drugstore, Singaraja, Indonesia

Two businesses selling medicines and other health products, the Hasanuddin Pharmacy and the Sumber Waras Drugstore, stand side by side in this street of Singaraja, Bali. The design of these signs clearly shows they were painted by the same person. The colours of the first one are slightly less vibrant though.

Telkomsel Kartu As, Singaraja, Indonesia

For this week's series of painted signs, we're heading to Indonesia, and more precisely to the island of Bali.
Telkomsel is one of Indonesia's leading mobile phone operators and this large painted sign near the Chinese temple Ling Gwan Kiong advertises their various products and packages under the brand Kartu As (Ace Card). Its prpmoters claim Kartu As is not only the cheapest ("Paling murah") but also the best for Bali ("Paling Bali")

Tali Jagat Raya, Banyuatis

A stop along the road between Munduk and the north coast of Bali to look at rice terraces in the morning sun also provided an opportunity to take a picture of a recently painted sign.

Tali Jagat Raya is a brand of cigarettes manufactured by the Bentoel Group, Indonesia's second largest tobacco company and a subsidiary of British American Tobacco.

Warung Makan, Ubud

With temperatures soaring in the UK today, I thought this painted sign for cold drinks would be quite appropriate.

In Indonesia and Malaysia, a warung is a family-owned business. The term often applies to small shops that sell cigarettes, candy, bottled drinks and a few basic products, to cafes, or to restaurants. At this warung in Penestanan, a hamlet just to the west of Ubud, Bali's "cultural capital", there was certainly more than just cold drinks on offer. Indeed makan (litterally "to eat" or "eating") would suggest some food of some sort was also available, maybe some bakso ayam (chicken noodle soup), some nasi goreng (fried rice), or some mie goreng (fried noodles).

Haircut, Ababi

If I had stopped each time I saw a hand painted sign in Bali, I wouldn't have had time to enjoy the amazing scenery, the fascinating temples or to sample the delicious food. Like in other countries of the region, their density is extremely high indeed. Still I managed to photograph some while passing, including this one in Ababi, a small village just above the water palace and rice terraces of Tirtagangga in the eastern part of the island.
It was relatively easy to guess this sign advertised the services of a hairdresser. First there was the pair of scissors and "rambut" reminded me of "rambutan", the delicious fruit with a hairy skin. Once back home I could check in the dictionary and found that "potong rambut" means "haircut". "Hairdresser" would have been "penata rambut".
The second line of the sign tells the opening time. "Buka" means "open" and "siang" refers to the part of the day that corresponds to the late morning and early afternoon, roughly between 11:30am and 3:00pm (in Indonesia, the day is divided between "pagi", "siang", "sore", "malam", and "tidur").
