Sunlight soap and J. G. Chaddock, Weymouth

In a small street away from Weymouth's popular seafront is a very faded ghost sign for Lever Brothers' best selling product: Sunlight soap.

This is not the first time Sunight soap features on this blog and some information about the company and its product can be found alongside the ghost signs seen in Battersea and Upper Clapton.

Additional Sunlight ghost signs published so far include those from Willesden, Highbury, and Ravenscourt Park.

Sunlight soap was available at J. G. Chaddock's grocery store. Chaddock certainly allowed Lever Brothers to advertise its product on the wall above his shop and in return got his name and business added below. This kind of arrangement was similar to the one between Hovis and some bakers.

Cars bought, sold and exchanged; Weymouth

Here is my latest ghost sign "discovery", spotted in a backstreet of Weymouth. The current sign, promoting a used car dealer, was painted over an earlier one. A few letters are still visible here and there, but not enough to make any sense of it.

Cars Bought, Sold and Exchanged

Since the street is too narrow (or the sign too long) I used four photos to create the picture below.

Girls' school, Weymouth

Today is the first day of September and soon pupils and teachers will be going back to school, as they certainly did at this girls' school more than a century ago.

Two signs have been painted by the entrance of this early nineteenth century town house. The original reads

The more recent one reads

Sanders, Weymouth

Conveniently located on the quay along Weymouth's outer harbour, this coal merchant could have been serving the local population as well as steamboats anchored nearby.

Farwell, Weymouth

Earlier this year, inspired maybe by my recent reading of On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan and convinced by the special weekend offers of South West Trains, we decided to go for a walk along the South West Coast Path, from Weymouth to Abbotsbury. As the train approached its final destination I noticed a lovely Victorian or Edwardian frontage of what was certainly a butcher's shop, and almost next to it, this doorstep mosaic. The current state of the building doesn't do justice to the elegant lettering but at least it has survived. Let's hope it will still be with us for a long time.
