Mystery sign, Fulham

A few weeks ago, Sam Roberts, of Ghostsigns, alerted me to an emerging ghost sign on Lillie Road in Fulham.

It is still largely hidden underneath white paint but what appeared so far looks very colourful. Yet not enough can be seen to identify which business was advertised there, although my guess is it would have been the store next door (nowadays the one with the black fascia and blue lettering). It is very tempting to go back and peel that paint off!

After a closer look, it appears there were two signs painted on this wall: one on a red background, which was then covered by one on a yellow background.

...bar... [on red background]
...t... [on yellow background]

Location: Lillie Road / Pictures taken in July 2012

Someone's got to do it, rip off the paint and reveal the history underneath...

This comment posted to Facebook: "Rummaged around online and the Post Office London County Suburbs Directory of 1919 lists 225 Lillie Rd as being an undertakers by the name of "Barker Hy. Alex". Could this be the BAR peeping out of the white paint?"

Possibly, although signs for undertakers are usually less cheerful. We'll have to wait for that paint to come off!

Perhaps a palimpsest, this response from the person who took the first photo I saw of the location: "I get the feeling there's possibly more than one layer but that could certainly be one of them! There's several other nice big signs along that road so it must have been really colourful at one time! One of the others is Brymay and the colours are about the same so that was my guess but in retrospect I don't think it fits whereas your one does."

There are two signs indeed. I should have precised it (I updated the text).
By the way, I had a closer look at the close up I took and it doesn't look like "Barker": the letter after the 'R' isn't straight enough to be a 'K'. My guess is it's a 'A'.
