Indian cement manufacturer Shaktiman Ltd was founded in 1991 in Delhi. The company's logo makes full use of the name: indeed, Shaktimaan in India refers to someone, usually not from this world, with extraordinary powers ("शक्ति / shakti" means "power"). In other words, some kind of Superman.

Kirloskar and Yeti Paints, Kathmandu

Here are two roller shutters with colourful painted signs for completely different brands. Kirloskar is an Indian conglomerate whose origins go back to 1888. It specialises, amongst other things, in electrical equipment. Meanwhile, as the name suggests, Yeti Paints is a Nepalese paint manufacturer.

The Yeti Paints example shows that signs painted on roller shutters are not necessarily connected to the activity carried out in the premises. Indeed, this is a small restaurant specialising, amongst other dishes, in momo (Tibetan-style dumplings, one of the country's most popular foods).

Established in 1984, Pashupati Paints is now one of Nepal's leading brands of paint. Its advertisements can be seen everywhere across the country. The name was probably chosen for its good omen and because Nepalese people were already very familiar with it: indeed Pashupati is one of the multiple names of the great God Shiva and the temple of Pashupatinath, just to the east of Kathmandu city centre, is one of the country's most sacred sites.

August Haackert, Gustrow

A couple of warehouses are still standing near Güstrow train station, between the aptly-named Speicherstraße (Warehouses Street) and the railway tracks 

One of these belonged to coal merchant August Haackert. The building dates probably from the late 19th or early 20th century and was used to store coal and building materials. Following the fall of the Wall, it was used briefly to store cereals.

After years of decay, the Haackert warehouse, which is listed, has been recently restored and houses nowadays the "Physiotherapie im Speicher" practice.

Since these photos were taken the windows and the roof have been replaced and the ghost sign given a new coat of paint.

Marcel Borde, Bourg-sur-Gironde

A lovely late 19th-early 20th century sign for ironmonger Marcel Borde.

This is one of several painted signs that can still be seen while strolling through the streets of Bourg-sur-Gironde, a lovely little town on the bank of the River Dordogne, 40 km north of Bordeaux.

John C. Mather, Islington

Builder and decorator John Cameron Mather was in business between c. 1906 and 1941. He lived in Alwyne Villas and this ghost sign marked the entrance to his yard.

The address given in business directories is that of his offices, which were located nearby at 38 Nothampthon Street.

J. Crane, House Decorator; Stoke Newington

The first time I saw this ghost sign in 2008, it was partly covered by a graffiti (and a pretty bad one at that).

Five years later the graffiti was gone and the ghost sign for James Crane could be seen in full.

It certainly dates from the last decade (or couple of decades) of the 19th century. James Crane is mentioned in a couple of publications from that period indeed. In October 1894 readers of the London Gazette learnt that James Crane, builder and contractor, of 121, Church Street, Stoke Newington, was bankrupt. Two years later, a notice of intended dividends was published in the London Gazette and reprinted in several professional journals, including Timber and Plywood.
